McNamara, Ann – Photo from Declaration of Intention. 18JUN1934
When I would take Aunt Dolly (Cecelia McDonough) on her monthly visit to Holy Cross Cemetery we would we visit a grave under a tree in Section 35. The grave of Ann McNamara (Ann Mac). Ann was my grandmother’s (Sabina Mangan McDonough) friend and I vaguely remember meeting Ann Mac when I was younger.
As my mind is constantly figuring out how someone is related to us, I sat down and started digging for information on Ann McNamara.
Born in Achill on 16 Jan 1899 and died here in Cleveland on 11 Feb 1981. Ann departed Queenstown, Ireland, arriving in New York on 28 Oct 1924 on the vessel “Laconia”.
It was the address on Ann’s Declaration of Intention that rang a bell… 3921 Mapledale Ave, Cleveland, Ohio. Wait! Mapledale? I knew the Greys and McManamons lived on Mapledale. I continue to read through the Petition for Naturalization and sure enough the witnesses were John J. McManamon living at 3921 Mapledale Avenue; and Anne J. Grey living at 2033 West 98th Street on 1 Oct 1931.
In the 1940 Census Ann lived and worked at Statler Hotel on Euclid Avenue in Cleveland. The same hotel my grandmother worked.
I needed to figure out where the connection is, I have some information on Thomas Owen McNamara (abt 1861-23 Dec 1929) and Catherine O’Malley (abt 1864 – 17 Jun 1921). Catherine O’Malley McNamara is our Mary Malley Mangan’s sister. I know their mother was Mary Mangan O’Malley born abt 1826.
I found the 1901 Ireland Census of Owen McNamara with wife Catherine (O’Malley); daughters Mary, Bridget, Catherine, and Anne (who happens to be two years old in 1901, which means she was born in 1899) and the last line list a Mary Malley as mother-in-law at the age of 75 (birth year 1826). Many pieces of the puzzle came together here.
Ann McNamara and my grandmother were first cousins.
