Robert E. Grey , 57, a theatrical set designer, actor and Kent State University Costume Museum exhibits coordinator, died of complications of cancer Saturday at his home in Cleveland Heights.
The Cleveland native was in the Army when he had his first notable excursion into drama. He joined the Army in the early 1960s after graduating from John Marshall High School. While stationed in Germany, he was an extra in crowd scenes in several movies. He snagged the job of double for actor James Garner in the film "The Great Escape."
Upon leaving the military in the mid-1960s, Mr. Grey acted and worked at the Cleveland Play House. There he met actress Paula Duesing, who would become his wife.
In 1972, the couple moved to Seattle, where they were married in 1975. Mr. Grey designed sets and created masks and fantasy props for shows. He acted in Seattle plays, including a production of "Three Penny Opera" in which he played MacHeath.
After returning to Cleveland in 1977, Mr. Grey started a business as a cabinet maker. He also built furniture and made wooden toys.
He kept his hand in theater, acting in productions at the Cleveland Play House and other theaters. His last performance was as Lucky in the 1996 production of "Waiting for Godot" at Cabaret Dada's Black Box Theatre.
Three years ago, he graduated from Cleveland State University with a bachelor's degree in English. Last winter, Mr. Grey completed an adaptation of Dylan Thomas' play for voices, "Under Milk Wood."
His widow, along with actors Evie McElroy, Morgan Lund and Andrew May under the direction of Sarah May, will present a reading of his script at 2 p.m. Nov. 24 at Kent State University Museum in Rockwell Hall, at E. Main and S. Lincoln streets, Kent.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Grey is survived by a son, Jason A. of Athens, Ohio; daughters, Morgan E. and Bryn M., both of Cleveland Heights; three brothers; and a sister.
