58 I lost my best friend yesterday. You knew him as Mike from Facebook, work or as a parent you met while he was doing what he loved to do the most, being a Dad.

I called him Milzy. He was four years older than me and one of the most annoying and aggravating people I knew, but I think that’s a brother thing.

Milz was a big man with an even bigger heart. Being 4 years younger than him I was happily included in many of his adventures and shenanigans growing up. Being in a family of 8 means Mike and I pretty much shared everything. I was also lucky enough to work construction with him for about 20 years after high school. Every day working with him was filled with laughter. Even on the hardest jobs, Mike found a way to make it a little bit easier. I could get into all the pranks and tricks he pulled on me and I fell for every time, but that would take hours.

Mike and my father were very much alike. Both were very inclusive people that loved to make people laugh and smile. I can’t count the number of times that he would call to let me know that there was a job going on and to call my friends or anyone that needed the money. One job we were on my brothers Dave and Matt showed up to do the plaster work. I don’t think they even knew what plaster was, but Mike saw an opportunity to get them on the job. By the time the job was finished they patched plaster on 8 floors and worked another year on the next project. But that was Mike, he was always willing to spread the wealth. He just wanted people to be happy. It was important to him just as it was to my dad.

Milzy was a simple guy. All he needed was his family. He left us with his family holding him and my father greeting him. Just as he would’ve wanted it.

Mike was a lot of things to a lot of people. Our friend Jason pretty much summed it up perfectly for me. “Ya he had a big heart Marty , not everyone knew that or saw that but the people that really knew him knew”

I lost my best friend yesterday.

Warm tributes paid to ‘true warrior’ Trisha
Much-loved Warrior’s Run committee member and school secretary is remembered with great fondness

HER many friends and colleagues in Sligo have been paying tribute to a woman described as “a true warrior”.

Those words are among many beautiful tributes offered this week in memory and appreciation of Trisha Glynn, a dearly loved member of the Warriors Run festival committee in Strandhill and a secretary at St Edward’s National School in Ballytvinan whose many special qualities endeared her to so many people of all ages.

Trisha, who passed away on Monday, was also fondly remembered by many of the staff and pupils at St Edward’s National School in Sligo where she worked as school secretary for more than two decades.

Meanwhile, in a post on the Warriors Run Facebook page, they shared the sad news: “It is with the greatest sadness in our hearts that we learn today of the passing of our dearest friend and long-term committee member Trisha.

“Trisha was a stalwart of the committee and a true warrior in every sense of the word. She will be deeply missed by all of us as well as her family, neighbours, and friends.

Another post, from her friends and colleagues at St Edward’s National School, stated: “We have lost a true legend today, iur lovely Trish has passed away.

“At the beating heart of our school every day for the last 21 years, our wonderful secretary, friend and colleague will be truly, deeply missed.

“Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam dílís.”

A guard of honour by staff, pupils, and parents, both past and present, was formed on Wednesday at St Edward’s NS in honour of Trisha.

On the St Edward’s NS Facebook page there have been some heartfelt tributes paid to her, one wrote: “Trish was always so friendly, supportive and respectful to everyone she encountered. We have very heavy hearts today on hearing this sad news. We send our sincere condolences to her family, friends, and work colleagues at this sad time. May her beautiful soul rest in peace.”

Another wrote: “RIP Trish...you were an amazing lady and always so helpful in St Edwards, you will always be remembered.”

Another comment alluded to Trisha’s contribution to the school: “So sad. Trish was the backbone of St. Edwards for so many years. A truly lovely lady who always offered a helping hand or kind word to any of us who had the pleasure of working alongside her. Sincere condolences to all her family. Rest easy Trish.”

This comment again reflects the positive impact Trish had on students at St Edward’s: “They broke the mould when they made Trish, she will be forever missed. We have heavy hearts in this house today. “All 3 boys have fond memories of her, she made a huge impact on them.”

Formerly of Greystones, Co. Wicklow and Achill, Co. Mayo, Trisha died peacefully at her home in Beachmount, Strandhill, surrounded by her family.
